In the field of economics, being a neophyte investor can be rather difficult, especially when one comes across terms often used interchangeably with others. A good example of this is fund managers, which some investors use to refer to those professionals who oversee their investments. In the same vein, another investor could prefer using the term asset manager. Yet, in essence, the two terms refer to just one person, an investment specialist who carefully plans a suitable investment management scheme for the investor.

It is basically the same with investment management, also called asset management. This, however, should not detract from the fact investment management is a strategy crafted by fund managers who consequently manage and guide the investments towards a desired goal. In return for coming up with a workable investment management scheme, fund managers get paid a certain fee. This is often in the form of percentage taken from the average number of assets that has been placed under the investment management program.

Typically, investment management suits those involved in several investment dealings such as money market, mutual funds, stocks, bonds and the like, all of which involve tons of mind-boggling paperwork. Without a good investment management account, the results can be disastrous for the ordinary investor.

Additionally, before the concept of investment management was broached, most investors had no choice but to maintain different and separate accounts for their various investment projects, including several banking accounts wherein they get to keep their consequent gains. Clearly, there was a need for a consolidated management program where the various facets of investment can be handled and kept in just one single file, and investment management was undoubtedly the most ideal solution.

Admittedly, the main idea being advanced by investment management is particularly significant under the present condition where rapid changes in technology are constantly taking place. This includes faster rates of information transfer and a greater demand for more convenient investment management practices. These factors, while generally positive in producing a favorable investment climate, can also make the investment process quite complex, and this is where investment management becomes a convenient tool.

In very simple terms, investment management involves the opening of an investment management account where investors initially deposit their money. Through the services of highly-qualified fund managers, the money gets invested in one or two investment schemes, often in the form of stocks or bonds purchases, and maybe even investment in mutual funds.

Either way, at a designated point, the investor under a given investment management program, should expect to receive a general statement detailing such financial activities as deposits made, interests received, investments made and many others. Although in the case of stocks, the services of brokers may have to be considered, since brokers are admittedly more adept in handling stocks investments.

There is little doubt that investment management is an important financial tool in modern-day investment procedures. Investors, though, need to make sure of the kind of fund managers they hire, looking closely at their professional credentials, including overall investment management experience.
